The purpose of the module is to support General Practitioners in diagnosis and management of Depression in line with current guidelines for best practice. This eLearning module is divided into 4 key lessons (Lessons 1-4). Each lesson comprises a video presentation conveying the core material. Most presentations are under 10 minutes long to facilitate opportunistic learning. Supplementary lessons, where non-core material is presented, and relevant printable and downloadable material are also included within most lessons.
A further 2 Additional Lessons (Lessons 5&6) are also included. These include a selection of Q&As, and 5 clinical cases.

    The six lessons include:
    • Lesson 1: Introduction, Screening & Diagnosis 
      This lesson highlights some epidemiological data on depression, briefly covers the subject of classification and summarises the current conversation and guidelines around screening and the use of diagnostic tools in the diagnosis of depression. 
    • Lesson 2: Non-Pharmacological Management of Depression 
      This lesson highlights the importance of non-pharmacological, evidence-based treatment options in the management of depression.
    • Lesson 3: Pharmacological Management of Depression 
      This lesson summarises some current guidelines on the use pharmacotherapy in the management of Depression.
    • Lesson 4: Cognitive Behavioural Therapy (CBT) 
      This lesson highlights the value of CBT in the management of mild to moderate depression and demonstrates some simple CBT-based strategies.
    • Lesson 5: Questions & Answers 
      This lesson presents some common questions regarding management of depression in primary care.
    • Lesson 6: Case Scenarios 
      This lesson presents 5 case histories and includes a brief discussion of each case.


The Medical Council has defined eight domains of good professional practice. These domains describe a framework of competencies applicable to all doctors across the continuum of professional development from formal medical education and training through to maintenance of professional competence. Since they describe the outcomes which doctors should strive to achieve, doctors should refer to these domains throughout the process of maintaining competence.
