Think Ahead the 'flagship project' of the Forum on End of Life in Ireland which was launched in March 2009 by President McAleese. Following a public consultation identifying a issues of concern to the public, an action plan was devised. Central to this is developing of initiatives to help the public engage with end of life issues and plan their own responses. 

This eLearning module is divided into 3 key lessons, which comprise a video presentation conveying the core material; supplementary videos, where non-core material is presented; and relevant printable and downloadable material. There are also Clinical Scenarios  and an MCQ . Most presentations are under 10 minutes long to facilitate opportunistic learning.

Development of this module was funded by an unrestricted educational grant from The Irish Hospice Foundation.


This eLearning module is divided into 3 key lessons (Lessons 1-3). Each lesson comprises a number of video presentations. Most presentations are under 10 minutes long to facilitate opportunistic learning. Supplementary lessons, where non-core material is presented, and relevant printable and downloadable material are also included within most lessons.

Lesson 1: Introducing End-of-Life Planning with 'Think Ahead'
This lesson highlights the benefits of end-of-life planning and introduces the 'Think Ahead' tool.

Lesson 2: Opening the Conversation
This lesson considers how to open a conversation around end-of-life planning

Lesson 3: Reflections on Experience with 'Think Ahead'
This lesson presents some reflections on the use of the 'Think Ahead' tool in general practice


The Medical Council has defined eight domains of good professional practice. These domains describe a framework of competencies applicable to all doctors across the continuum of professional development from formal medical education and training through to maintenance of professional competence. Since they describe the outcomes which doctors should strive to achieve, doctors should refer to these domains throughout the process of maintaining competence.
