Welcome to this module on Long Acting Reversible Contraception or LARC in Primary Care. This eLearning module provides current and practical information for GPs around the use of LARCs. Patient education, pre-insertion counselling and post-insertion advice are highlighted. (Please note that this module is separate to the LARC Insertion Training Programme provided by the ICGP, details of which can be found on the college website).
Overview of Module
This eLearning module is divided into 5 key lessons. Each lesson comprises a video presentation conveying the core material. Most presentations are close to 10 minutes long to facilitate opportunistic learning. Supplementary lessons, where non-core material is presented, and relevant printable and downloadable material are also included within most lessons.
This Module was supported by an unrestricted educational grant from the HSE Sexual Health and Crisis Pregnancy Programme:

The 5 lessons are as follows:
Lesson 1: Introduction to LARC
The promotion of LARCs as a highly effective, safe and cost efficient option for contraception, among women of all ages, underpins much of the work in women's health in the ICGP. This short lesson highlights low uptake rates for LARCs in Ireland.Lesson 2: Progestogen-only Implants - Pre-Insertion
This lesson outlines current guidance around assessment and patient education prior to insertion of progestogen-only implants.Lesson 3: Progestogen-only Implants - Insertion & Removal
Insertion of a subdermal implant is a minimally invasive procedure, which can be undertaken by trained GPs in a community setting. (Please note that this lesson is for demonstration purposes only, and does not prepare GPs for independent insertion or removal of deviceLesson 4: Intrauterine Contraception - Pre-Insertion
This lesson outlines assessments which should be undertaken, and issues which should be discussed prior to insertion of an intrauterine device (copper & hormonal).Lesson 5: Intrauterine Contraception - Insertion & Removal
This lesson demonstrates procedures which should be followed, when an IUCD is inserted. (Please note that this lesson is for demonstration purposes only, and does not prepare GPs for independent insertion or removal of devices).
The Medical Council has defined eight domains of good professional practice. These domains describe a framework of competencies applicable to all doctors across the continuum of professional development from formal medical education and training through to maintenance of professional competence. Since they describe the outcomes which doctors should strive to achieve, doctors should refer to these domains throughout the process of maintaining competence. In order to assist you in planning your professional competence, ICGP eLearning highlight the domains addressed in each module as set out below.
NOTE: While a number of ICGP modules have a tight focus on one or two domains, most modules endeavour to address all domains to some degree (low, medium, high). This is clearly displayed in the diagram below:
