Overview of Module
This Module was supported by an unrestricted educational grant from the HSE Sexual Health and Crisis Pregnancy Programme:
Lesson 1: Overview of ContraceptionData suggests that there are still a significant number of women in Ireland engaging in sexual activity on an occasional or regular basis, who do not use any or adequate contraception. This lesson highlights the role of GPs in informing women of the range of contraceptive options available to them.
Lesson 2: Combined Hormonal ContraceptionThis lesson focuses on combined hormonal contraception (CHC), and on the first-pill consultation in particular. Much of the information (particularly safety information), is relevant to all contraceptives which contain oestrogen-like compounds, such as the ring and the patch.
Lesson 3: Progestogen-only PillThis lesson focuses on issues around progestogen-only pills (POPs), and references the Faculty of Sexual & Reproductive Health or FSRH guidelines on progestogen-only pills. Since all the other progestogen-only products are LARCs, they are addressed in detail in a separate LARC eLearning module, which can be accessed on ICGP Education.
Lesson 4: Emergency ContraceptionWomen requesting emergency contraception should be informed of all options available to them. In Ireland currently, these are levonorgestrel and ulipristal acetate tablets, or a copper containing intrauterine device (IUCD). This lesson outlines the issues around prescription & use of these options.
